NFL referee Carl Cheffers has responded to the criticism he’s gotten from the Kansas City Chiefs in the wake of their loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
The Chiefs were pretty upset over the offside call that cost them a go-ahead touchdown, and likely a win, as Kadarius Toney was flagged for having lined up incorrectly after finding himself in the end zone late in the fourth quarter.
Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes both launched at the officials while speaking to reporters following the 20-17 loss as they felt like they should have been warned about the offside.
“Normally I get a warning before something like that happens in a big game. A bit embarrassing in the NFL for that to take place” Reid remarked.
Mahomes said:
“Another game we’re talking about the refs. “It’s not what we want for the NFL. It’s not what we want for football. Let us play the game. Then whatever happens happens.”
Cheffers, who made the call on the field, has since explained his decision, telling a pool reporter that he was not required to give a warning based on how far offside Toney was standing.
“Certainly, no warning is required, especially if they are lined up so far offsides where they’re actually blocking our view of the ball,” he said.
“If it’s egregious enough, it would be beyond a warning. So really regardless of whether or not he was warned at other times during the day, if it was an egregious alignment to where he was over the ball — whether he had warnings or not — it would still be a foul.”

Things could get worse for Reid and Mahomes as their comments will be reviewed by the NFL given the league’s longstanding policy on questioning the integrity of the officials.
