The 49ers got some bad injury news following their first joint practice with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Key wide receiver and return specialist Ray-Ray McCloud suffered a broken wrist, according to 49ers insider Matt Maiocco.
He will be getting surgery on the injury and is expected to miss at least eight weeks.
“Return specialist Ray-Ray McCloud will be out for eight weeks due to a broken left wrist. He’ll undergo surgery., and that leaves the return job to start the season wide open,” Maiocco wrote.
That means San Francisco needs a new return man, both on kickoffs and punt returns.
“It could be a little less,” Shanahan said of the timeframe. “Hopefully, it is. We’ll see. I think he’s getting surgery Friday.”

This puts the 49ers in a bit of a bind since it sounds like McCloud will miss the first couple of weeks of the regular season. San Francisco could keep him on the active roster and keep him inactive on game days until he’s ready.
McCloud played 140 special teams snaps last season. He was also in on 286 offensive snaps, finishing the season with 14 receptions for 243 yards and a touchdown. McCloud also had four carries for 78 yards and a rushing touchdown.
