Here we are nine weeks into the 2024 NFL season, and by now, we’ve got a pretty good read on which head coaches are pushing their teams to greatness—and which ones are barely staying afloat. In fact, we may end up seeing a couple of guys lose jobs in short order.
Time to dive in and look at where every team’s head coach stacks up against his peers.
Who are the top-ranking head coaches in the NFL after week 9?
32. Chicago Bears: Matt Eberflus (Last Week #28)
Matt Eberflus’s job as a head coach has to be in jeopardy at this point, as his NFL team continues to flounder with him at the helm.
31. New Orleans Saints: Dennis Allen (Last Week #30)
Dennis Allen’s job is looking increasingly precarious. After starting the season 2-0, the Saints have dropped seven straight games under his leadership, and the team’s inability to execute late in games has become painfully obvious.
30. Las Vegas Raiders: Antonio Pierce (Last Week #31)

Pierce needs to use the bye week to address the fundamental issues and bring some stability back to a team that’s struggling to compete; otherwise, he will be in serious jeopardy of losing his job.
29. Carolina Panthers: Dave Canales (Last Week #32)
This win was as much a testament to Canales’s coaching adjustments as it was to the players efforts, as he and his staff finally tried to bring a new approach to the table.
28. Dallas Cowboys: Mike McCarthy (Last Week #27)
With three consecutive losses and a visibly frustrated roster, McCarthy will be feeling the pressure to turn things around. His ability to rally the team and address their mounting issues will be crucial to his job security as Dallas navigates the next few weeks.
27. Tennessee Titans: Brian Callahan (Last Week #29)
Brian Callahan earned his first home win as head coach, and the emotions were evident for their NFL team. After a rough start to the season, Callahan desperately needed this win, not just for himself but to inspire his team and build confidence.

26. New England Patriots: Jerod Mayo (Last Week #22)
First-year head coach Jerod Mayo has been thrown into the deep end, managing a rebuilding team with a rookie NFL quarterback, but his decision-making is still a huge concern.
25. New York Giants: Brian Daboll (Last Week #23)
Brian Daboll’s Giants are struggling, and this loss marks their fourth straight, as they’ve fallen to 2-7. It does seem that ownership is going to give him a pass until they get another quarterback slotted in under center.
24. Jacksonville Jaguars: Doug Pederson (Last Week #25)
Doug Pederson returned to Philadelphia, and his team fought hard but couldn’t deliver a victory. It is hard to believe that Pederson will still have a job by the time this season is over.
23. Miami Dolphins: Mike McDaniel (Last Week #24)
McDaniel’s leadership has the Dolphins looking competitive, but close losses like this one sting, especially in back-to-back weeks with Tua back in action to boot.
22. New York Jets: Jeff Ulbrich (Last Week #26)
Jeff Ulbrich, the interim head coach, has had his hands full since stepping into this role with all the changes to this NFL roster, and he can finally exhale after getting a W this week.
21. Cleveland Browns: Kevin Stefanski (Last Week #17)
Stefanski’s decision-making is under the microscope as the Browns continue to falter in close games, though, with this essentially being a lost season, he shouldn’t have too much to worry about the big picture.
20. Philadelphia Eagles: Nick Sirianni (Last Week #18)
While it is clear that he is still not back in the good graces of the fans, Sirianni did manage to coach the Eagles to another win, moving them to 6-2.
19. Seattle Seahawks: Mike Macdonald (Last Week #21)
Mike Macdonald’s decision-making was put to the test, particularly with the choice to go for it on fourth-and-1 in overtime instead of kicking the field goal. The gamble didn’t pay off, and the turnover set up the Rams’ game-winning drive.
18. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Todd Bowles (Last Week #16)
Todd Bowles has his hands full with all the injuries, but he needs to get this squad to play cleaner football.
17. Arizona Cardinals: Jonathan Gannon (Last Week #20)
Despite all of the scrutiny, Gannon now has his Cards up over .500 and is competing in a surprisingly wide-open NFC West.
16. Indianapolis Colts: Shane Steichen (Last Week #14)
With Flacco at the helm, he hoped the experience would provide stability, but Steichen’s game plan was way too conservative, and the Colts never really came to life in Week 9.
15. Cincinnati Bengals: Zac Taylor (Last Week #19)
Zac Taylor dialed up a perfect response after last week’s loss, leaning into the run and finding the right mix of play-calling to keep the Raiders guessing and secure a must-win victory.
14. Denver Broncos: Sean Payton (Last Week #8)
Sean Payton’s game plan fell flat against a well-prepared Ravens squad. Credit to him, though, for trying to remain aggressive, as he realized early that conservative football was not going to hit the mark.
13. Houston Texans: DeMeco Ryans (Last Week #6)
DeMeco Ryans was visibly frustrated with his team’s performance on Thursday Night Football, and rightly so, as they can’t seem to get out of their own way of late. It is clear that Ryans has built a strong culture, so Texans fans should be optimistic that they will rebound.
12. Atlanta Falcons: Raheem Morris (Last Week #12)
With the team holding first place in the NFC South, Morris has the Falcons believing in themselves and playing at a high level. Head Coach Morris’s leadership is showing as Atlanta is finding ways to win games it might have lost in previous NFL seasons.
11. Los Angeles Rams: Sean McVay (Last Week #15)
Sean McVay showed patience and faith in his squad, particularly his defense, and it paid off. Don’t look now, but his team has climbed to 4-4, and the NFC West is wide open.
10. Buffalo Bills: Sean McDermott (Last Week #11)
Sean McDermott’s faith in Tyler Bass proved to be the game-winner. McDermott’s decision to send Bass out for the 61-yard kick with 5 seconds left won the Bills the game.
9. Pittsburgh Steelers: Mike Tomlin (Last Week #9)
Mike Tomlin continues to be the steady hand steering this team through both highs and lows. Going into the bye at 6-2, Tomlin should have a high vibe in the Steelers locker room.
8. Los Angeles Chargers: Jim Harbaugh (Last Week #13)
Harbaugh leaned into his team’s strengths, letting Herbert air it out early before turning to a bruising run game and a stifling defense to secure the win.
7. Green Bay Packers: Matt LaFleur (Last Week #3)
LaFleur has the pieces but needs to tighten up discipline and capitalize on red-zone opportunities if the Packers want to compete in a challenging NFC North. It would be good to see him feed the hot hand more in Josh Jacobs rather than defaulting to the pass when they fall behind.
6. Minnesota Vikings: Kevin O'Connell (Last Week #10)
Kevin O’Connell continues to prove why he’s the right head coach for this NFL squad, as Minnesota moves to 6-2 after notching yet another impressive win.
5. San Francisco 49ers: Kyle Shanahan (Last Week #4)
Kyle Shanahan’s offensive expertise continues to shine as he devises schemes that maximize the talents of his players despite the glaring absence of Christian McCaffrey and now Brandon Aiyuk.
4. Baltimore Ravens: John Harbaugh (Last Week #7)
John Harbaugh continues to prove that he is one of the best in the business with another impressive win.
3. Washington Commanders: Dan Quinn (Last Week #5)
Dan Quinn has instilled resilience and discipline in this Commanders squad, which was evident in how they handled the emotional high from last week’s dramatic win and stayed focused on knocking off the lowly Giants.
2. Kansas City Chiefs: Andy Reid (Last Week #2)
Andy Reid has this Chiefs team humming along at 8-0, with Reid’s offensive mind working in harmony with Mahomes yet again.
1. Detroit Lions: Dan Campbell (Last Week #1)
Dan Campbell’s gritty philosophy was on full display. He made it clear to his team that they were often pegged as a “dome team” and needed to prove they could adapt to any environment, which they did.
