With Week 8 in the books, it’s time to see which head coaches are thriving and which are barely hanging on.
From the bold play-callers to the steady strategists — and the ones scrambling to keep their jobs — it’s time to rank all 32 NFL head coaches for the 2024 season.
Who are the top-ranking head coaches in the NFL after week 8?
32. Carolina Panthers: Dave Canales (Last Week #32)
Things keep getting worse for Dave Canales. Week 8 saw a disaster of a fake punt en route to another humiliating loss.
31. Las Vegas Raiders: Antonio Pierce (Last Week #31)
At this point, there is a big concern that Antonio Pierce will be one and done as a head coach. At a minimum, he will need to refine his approach, especially with better clock management and more creative play-calling in the red zone.
30. New Orleans Saints: Dennis Allen (Last Week #30)

Dennis Allen is facing a tough stretch, with the Saints dropping six in a row. Turning to Jake Haener in relief of Spencer Rattler shows just how desperate Allen is for answers.
29. Tennessee Titans: Brian Callahan (Last Week #27)
Brian Callahan has his work cut out for him. The Titans look lost and on the verge of quitting, especially with key players like DeAndre Hopkins and Ernest Jones Jr. out the door.
28. Chicago Bears: Matt Eberflus (Last Week #20)
There is serious reason to question if Matt Eberflus is worthy of being an NFL head coach, as he clearly needs more polish in close-game situations.
27. Dallas Cowboys: Mike McCarthy (Last Week #26)
Tough Sunday night for Mike McCarthy and the Cowboys as they got worn down and embarrassed by the 49ers on national television.

26. New York Jets: Jeff Ulbrich (Last Week #25)
Jeff Ulbrich called it “darkness” after the game, and the Jets are certainly in it. He’s got to find a way to rally this team or risk letting the season slip away completely.
25. Jacksonville Jaguars: Doug Pederson (Last Week #29)
From penalties that extended Green Bay’s drives to a struggling secondary, Pederson has to address these recurring issues if he wants to keep his job. At least he finally got them to show some fight out there.
24. Miami Dolphins: Mike McDaniel (Last Week #24)
Mike McDaniel put together a solid game plan to get Tua back in rhythm, and Miami’s offense looked sharp early on, but the game slipped away from them late.
23. New York Giants: Brian Daboll (Last Week #21)
Brian Daboll has had his hands full in New York this season due to the Giants’ disastrous quarterback situation, but the consensus seems to be that unless the wheels completely come off, New York will keep him around for the rebuild.
22. New England Patriots: Jerod Mayo (Last Week #28)
Jerod Mayo had his guys ready to fight after calling them soft, and to his credit, they rallied to knock off their division rivals.
21. Seattle Seahawks: Mike Macdonald (Last Week #14)
Despite entering the game in first place in the division, Macdonald’s Seahawks look to be in danger of unraveling. They have now lost four of five and are in big trouble.
20. Arizona Cardinals: Jonathan Gannon (Last Week #22)
Credit to Jonathan Gannon, who has gotten a lot of flack this year, for keeping this team believing. The Cardinals are now on a two-game win streak with a .500 record.
19. Cincinnati Bengals: Zac Taylor (Last Week #16)
Zac Taylor’s plan looked strong out of the gate, but somewhere along the line, the script flipped. Taylor was vocal about the “second half not being good enough,” and now the Bengals season is really on life support.
18. Philadelphia Eagles: Nick Sirianni (Last Week #19)
Philly fans don’t know what to do with Nick Sirianni now that he and the Birds look to be turning the corner. His team came to play in Week 8 in a statement win over the Bengals.
17. Cleveland Browns: Kevin Stefanski (Last Week #23)
Kevin Stefanski had this team ready to fight. His game plan was clear: attack, take chances, and trust Winston to push the ball downfield. It’s been a tough season for Stefanski, but he’s kept the team motivated and playing hard, and this week had to feel good.
16. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Todd Bowles (Last Week #11)
Todd Bowles has his hands full with injuries this week, and it showed. His defense, which is supposed to be his calling card, struggled to contain the Falcons playmakers, and his decision to go for a fake punt backfired in a big way.
15. Los Angeles Rams: Sean McVay (Last Week #18)
Thursday Night Football marked the 80th win of Sean McVay’s impressive, young career. His offense looked the best it has all season, but that’s to be expected with a couple of big names back in the lineup.
14. Indianapolis Colts: Shane Steichen (Last Week #10)
Shane Steichen’s team fought hard but was plagued by penalties and missed chances. His faith in Richardson is evident, but he’ll need to work on polishing his young signal caller’s play.
13. Los Angeles Chargers: Jim Harbaugh (Last Week #17)
Jim Harbaugh’s emphasis on discipline and execution was evident, as the Chargers played with a crispness that kept the Saints on their heels all game.
12. Atlanta Falcons: Raheem Morris (Last Week #15)
In his first season at the helm, Morris has Atlanta sitting atop the NFC South, and his players are embracing his aggressive, play-to-win mentality. He is starting to look like one of the top young coaches in the game today.
11. Buffalo Bills: Sean McDermott (Last Week #12)
After a lot of criticism leading up to the season, Sean McDermott has to feel good about the way he has his team playing. Buffalo looks like the surefire top dog coming out of a mess of an AFC East.
10. Minnesota Vikings: Kevin O'Connell (Last Week #5)
Kevin O’Connell had a tough matchup facing his former boss, McVay, but couldn’t keep pace with the Rams offense, as McVay outmaneuvered him in the second half.
9. Pittsburgh Steelers: Mike Tomlin (Last Week #8)
Mike Tomlin continues to prove he is among the top head coaches in the league as this Steelers team continues to impress in 2024.
8. Denver Broncos: Sean Payton (Last Week #9)
Hard to believe it with the way the season started, but Sean Payton might actually have this Broncos team pointed in the right direction.
7. Baltimore Ravens: John Harbaugh (Last Week #3)
John Harbaugh’s Ravens looked sharp for most of the game, but they couldn’t seal the deal. You could see the frustration from Harbaugh on the sideline as opportunities slipped away and the Ravens’ win streak was snapped at five games.
6. Houston Texans: DeMeco Ryans (Last Week #7)
DeMeco Ryans is fostering a gritty mentality in Houston, and his players are buying in. Ryans’s approach is transforming the Texans into a competitive, well-rounded team that is now sitting atop the AFC South.
5. Washington Commanders: Dan Quinn (Last Week #6)
All the credit in the world to Dan Quinn, who has this young Commanders team believing they can win in any situation, and has proven to be the steady hand guiding them through close games with confidence.
4. San Francisco 49ers: Kyle Shanahan (Last Week #13)
No one can scheme up an offense like Kyle Shanahan. He had that offense humming on Sunday night despite Brandon Aiyuk being out for the season.
3. Green Bay Packers: Matt LaFleur (Last Week #4)
Matt LaFleur orchestrated a brilliant strategy, making adjustments to his game plan on the fly and managing to keep Green Bay afloat after losing his starting quarterback.
2. Kansas City Chiefs: Andy Reid (Last Week #1)
With the Chiefs unbeaten and showing poise under pressure, Reid’s leadership has this team primed for a deep run. He remains atop the NFL coaching hierarchy for another week!
1. Detroit Lions: Dan Campbell (Last Week #2)
Dan Campbell has this team clicking in all phases. His aggressive, no-nonsense style is rubbing off, and the Lions look like a team that’s ready to make some noise come playoff time, even without Aidan Hutchinson on defense.
