At this point in the season, we have started to see a couple of head coaches get the boot. Let’s take a look around and evaluate where ever NFL team’s head coach ranks among his peers.
32. Los Angeles Chargers Brandon Staley (Last Week #32)
It frankly does not get worse than this. Brandon Staley’s team straight up didn’t show up on Thursday Night Football and ownership took notice, as they promptly fired him shortly after the blowout loss to the Raiders.
31. Washington Commanders Ron Rivera (Last Week #31)
Ron Rivera is as good as gone in Washington. The veteran head coach has completely checked out and his team looks worse and worse each week.
30. Atlanta Falcons Arthur Smith (Last Week #24)
Arthur Smith’s seat has to be getting mighty hot in Atlanta. They are theoretically still in the hunt because of how terrible the NFC South it, but this recent loss to the Panthers might’ve tipped the scales.

29. Carolina Panthers Chris Tabor (Last Week #32)
Honestly, at this point, it isn’t guaranteed that Chris Tabor even keeps the interim tag for the remainder of the season. Granted, the Panthers season was already a failure, but things have only continued to torpedo under his leadership—even in a winning effort, it wasn’t’ pretty.
28. New England Patriots Bill Belichick (Last Week #28)
The narrative around Bill Belichick being out in New England is really starting to gain steam—and if you watched Sunday’s game, you’ll understand why. The Patriots look completely out of sorts and Belichick is still coaching like it is the early 2000s with some of the decisions he is making.
27. New York Jets Robert Saleh (Last Week #24)
With the way things are trending in New York, Robert Saleh may be out of a job by the end of this season. Granted, he had his work cut out for him with the injuries, but the Jets have been just plain old sad to watch under his leadership.
26. Arizona Cardinals Jonathan Gannon (Last Week #25)
Jonathan Gannon had a challenging matchup this week having to outduel Kyle Shanahan, one of the league’s top coaches. Obviously, the Niners offense is tough to stop, but he needs to start getting more creative with his defensive approach.
25. New York Giants Brian Daboll (Last Week #21)
Week 15 was brutal for Brian Daboll, as he seemed to run out magic with Tommy DeVito. Frankly, the problems extended beyond the backup quarterback though. Daboll’s Giants looked flat all game.
24. Tennessee Titans Mike Vrabel (Last Week #20)
Mike Vrabel’s Titans fought hard for him on Sunday, but ultimately came up short because of their inability to protect the quarterback. The veteran coach needs to find a way to get more consistent play out of the offensive line.
23. New Orleans Saints Dennis Allen (Last Week #28)
Dennis Allen did a nice job keeping the Saints offense moving this week considering the bevy of injuries on the offensive side of the ball. That said, it was only against the New York Giants and they will need to raise their level if they want to do any sort of damage come playoff time.
22. Pittsburgh Steelers Mike Tomlin (Last Week #18)
Things are going downhill fast in Pittsburgh for Mike Tomlin and the Steelers. The team looks completely out of wack and the quarterback situation is clearly starting to wear on the locker room.
21. Chicago Bears Matt Eberflus (Last Week #19)
Week 15 was a tough one for Matt Eberflus, as his scrappy young Bears team blew a lead late to Cleveland—unofficially ending their late-season playoff push
20. Green Bay Packers Matt LaFleur (Last Week #16)
Matt LeFleur’s bid for coach of the year burned out fast like a supernova. The Packers did look like they were building something, but these back-to-back losses all but eliminated them from postseason contention.
19. Seattle Seahawks Pete Carroll (Last Week #22)
Pete Carroll did his best to pull a rabbit out of his hat on Monday Night, but with Geno Smith sidelined by an injury, Seattle was simply overmatched by the Eagles.
18. Jacksonville Jaguars Doug Pederson (Last Week #15)
Doug Pederson has to find a way to calm his young quarterback down. This Jaguars team has a lot of potential, but it is going to continue to come up short in key situations if it can’t more consistency out of its leader.
17. Minnesota Vikings Kevin O'Connell (Last Week #17)
Credit to Kevin O’Connell for making the call to shake things up at quarterback, as Nick Mullens filled in nicely for the struggling Josh Dobbs. O’Connell, however, needs to make sure his team keeps its foot on the gas down the stretch this year because blowing another lead like this will be the nail in the coffin for their season.
16. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Todd Bowles (Last Week #23)
The Buccaneers looked good this week on offense, but it is hard to think that Bowles deserves much credit, as that has never been his primary focus. Bowels has not been super impressive this year.
15. Las Vegas Raiders Antonio Pierce (Last Week #26)
Week 15 was a big week for Antonio Pierce, who solidified himself as a legitimate candidate to take over as Raiders head coach full-time next season with his emphatic whomping of the LA Chargers.
14. Denver Broncos Sean Payton (Last Week #9)
Sean Payton’s Broncos really laid an egg on Saturday night after playing great ball for a month straight. Denver is now 7 and 7 and will likely need to find a way to win out if they want to sneak into the playoffs.
13. Buffalo Bills Sean McDermott (Last Week #14)
Sean McDermott has done a heck of a job rallying the troops in recent weeks amid all of the controversy surrounding him and the team. Buffalo is playing far and away its best football of the year and they could be trouble for the rest of the AFC if they can sneak into the postseason.
12. Indianapolis Colts Shane Steichen (Last Week #12)
The mark of a great coach is the ability to rally the troops after a tough loss and that is exactly what Shane Steichen did with this young Colts team heading into their Week 15 matchup with Pittsburgh. Steichen had an excellent game plan and his guys executed it perfectly.
11. Dallas Cowboys Mike McCarthy (Last Week #2)
Mike McCarthy let Sean McDermott coach circles around him this week. He completely failed to make any adjustments to the game plan when they were clearly needed with the way Buffalo jumped on them early.
10. Cleveland Browns Kevin Stefanski (Last Week #13)
Every week Kevin Stefanski seems to find a new way to impress. He did a great job of maintaining composure and put Joe Flacco in great situations all afternoon.
9. Houston Texans DeMeco Ryans (Last Week #10)
DeMeco Ryans did a great job of rallying the troops after their embarrassing loss to the Jets. Houston really rose to the occasion in Week 15 with C.J. Stroud missing due to injury.
8. Detroit Lions Dan Campbell (Last Week #11)
Dan Campbell’s Lions got their act together in a big way this week with their performance on Saturday against the Broncos. He had the offense humming all game and at long last, the defense started to show some teeth.
7. Philadelphia Eagles Nick Sirianni (Last Week #5)
Credit to Nick Sirianni for getting his Eagles back on track this week. Philly came ready to play on Monday Night Football—and executed its strategy perfectly, working the clock and dominating the flow of the game.
6. Miami Dolphins Mike McDaniel (Last Week #4)
Mike McDaniel had no problem scheming up an effective game plan against the Jets this week. Miami’s head coach is one of the top, young offensive minds in the game today.
5. Kansas City Chiefs Andy Reid (Last Week #8)
Andy Reid was on top of his game this week with the plan of attack against New England. Reid’s Chiefs were dominant all afternoon and put themselves back into the running to secure the one-seed in the AFC.
4. Cincinnati Bengals Zac Taylor (Last Week #6)
With each passing week Zac Taylor’s case for coach of the year seems to strengthen. The Bengals HC did a masterful job of rallying the troops on Saturday for that epic comeback win.
3. Los Angeles Rams Sean McVay (Last Week #7)
2023 Sean McVay has reminded everyone why he is one of the league’s top head coaches. The Rams HC has his team playing some of the best football in the NFC on both sides of the ball.
The Rams sit at 7 and 7, but if they can secure one of those NFC playoff spots they will be a tough out.
2. Baltimore Ravens John Harbaugh (Last Week #3)
Once again, John Harbaugh was able to get his Ravens up for a primetime matchup against another playoff contender. Baltimore looked sharp, particularly down the stretch, as they took care of business against the Jaguars.
1. San Francisco 49ers Kyle Shanahan (Last Week #1)
It is rare that a coach with an established reputation like Kyle Shanahan is in the running for Coach of the Year, but there is a very legitimate case for him. The 49ers are playing at an entirely different level from the rest of the league.
