Week 6 is a wrap and with a couple of big upsets out there, let’s take a look at the NFL landscape and see how everyone’s head coach stacks up.
32. Denver Broncos Sean Payton (Last Week #32)
For the second consecutive week, Sean Payton is in the bottom of the cellar. His Broncos have continued to struggle mightily on both sides of the ball.
31. Carolina Panthers Frank Reich (Last Week #31)
Carolina got off to a great start this week going up 14-0 on the Dolphins. Unfortunately, the good times stopped there, as Bryce Young cooled off quickly and Frank Reich had no answer for Mike Mcdaniel’s squad all afternoon.
30. New England Patriots Bill Belichick (Last Week #29)
I don’t know what was more painful for Bill Belichick… The back-to-back blowout losses or this week’s outcome—a big, fat L at the hands of his apprentice, Josh McDaniels.

29. Chicago Bears Matt Eberflus (Last Week #26)
After two promising outings, Matt Eberflus and the Bears took a huge step back this week. The offense completely stalled out and now that Justin Fields has a dislocated thumb, the Bears’ head coach will really have his work cut out for him.
28. New York Giants Brian Daboll (Last Week #29)
This was one of the better showings out of Brian Daboll and the New York Giants all season, as they took the Buffalo Bills down to the wire on Sunday Night. Daboll did a nice job scheming for Tyrod Taylor, who has a solid performance in Daniel Jones’ absence.
27. Washington Commanders Ron Rivera (Last Week #28)
Yes, the Commanders were able to secure a win this week against the Falcons, but that was largely due to Atlanta’s inadequacies at the quarterback position. It is starting to seem more and more like the game has passed Ron Rivera by, particularly when you juxtapose how dynamic and involved the younger coaches in the league are today.
26. Los Angeles Chargers Brandon Staley (Last Week #24)
Brandon Staley has to find a way to scheme better protections for Justin Herbert. His start quarterback spends an insane amount of time on the run and that caught up with the Chargers late on Monday Night, as Herbert was forced into a game-sealing interception by the Dallas pass rush.
25. Las Vegas Raiders Josh McDaniels (Last Week #27)
Back-to-back wins for Josh McDaniels and the Raiders may have saved both his job and their season. The Patriots may stink, but knocking off Bill Belichick had to be a nice notch in McDaniels’ belt.
24. BYE Green Bay Packers Matt LaFleur (Last Week #25)
After a tough showing on Monday Night Football Week 5, Matt LaFleur and his squad had a chance to regroup with a bye. Luckily, they should have a good opportunity to get right this week with the Broncos on the schedule.
23. Tennessee Titans Mike Vrabel (Last Week #18)
Mike Vrabel continues to fall in the rankings as his Titans’ struggles continue. Granted, he had his work cut out for him this week traveling to London to face the Ravens, not to mention the injury to Ryan Tannehill, but still… We expect more from Vrabel at this point.
22. Arizona Cardinals Jonathan Gannon (Last Week #15)
Jonathan Gannon deserves credit for what he’s done with a Cardinals team that has loads of holes on its roster, but it was not a good showing for them against Sean McVay and the Rams. Arizona was held to three field goals and looked out of sorts the entire game.
21. BYE Pittsburgh Steelers Mike Tomlin (Last Week #21)
Mike Tomlin’s Steelers have been up and down all season, let’s see if they use this bye week to straighten some of that out. They’ll have a challenging road matchup though, as Pittsburgh is headed to Los Angeles to face off with the Rams.
20. Minnesota Vikings Kevin O'Connell (Last Week #20)
Kevin O’Connell and the Vikings season was just starting to look like a wrap, but after a relatively convincing win over the admittedly lowly Bears, there is a sliver of hope for the Vikings.
19. Dallas Cowboys Mike McCarthy (Last Week #22)
Mike McCarthy has gotten a lot of flack for how the offense has performed since he took over play-calling duties, but Dallas actually looked pretty sharp on Monday Night. If he can find a way to get that running game going again, the Cowboys will be in a good spot to contend in the NFC.
18. New Orleans Saints Dennis Allen (Last Week #14)
What a let down for Dennis Allen and the Saints this week, who followed up their throttling of the Patriots with a stinker in a very winnable game against the Texans.
17. Indianapolis Colts Shane Steichen (Last Week #13)
Maybe the Coach of the Year chatter came a little early for Shane Steichen. Granted, he’s had his work cut out for him this season, but his Colts were unimpressive in a pivotal AFC South matchup with the Jaguars in Week 6.
16. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Todd Bowles (Last Week #8)
Todd Bowles Buccaneers really laid an egg coming off the bye this week as they had one of their first real tests of the season, welcoming the Lions to town. Detroit is obviously a solid side, but you have to be able to do better than six points at home coming off a bye.
15. Seattle Seahawks Pete Carroll (Last Week #7)
At this point, we expect more out of Pete Carroll coming off a bye than what his Seahawks delivered in Week 6. The Bengals jumped on them early and Seattle’s offense struggled to get off the mat all game.
14. Atlanta Falcons Arthur Smith (Last Week #10)
The Falcons fought hard—and played well on the defensive side of the ball, but with the massive liability at quarterback, Smith and Atlanta’s potential is limited.
13. Houston Texans DeMeco Ryans (Last Week #16)
This was a big win for DeMeco Ryans and his young Texans team. Sitting at 3-3 with a rookie quarterback is better than they could’ve expected and the offense looked fairly fluid against a strong Saints defense.
DeMeco also did well to instill the old “bend don’t break” mantra has they really limited New Orleans ability to convert yardage into points.
12. Cleveland Browns Kevin Stefanski (Last Week #19)
Not only did Kevin Stefanski knock off the San Francisco 49ers, he did so with his third-string quarterback, PJ Walker at the helm. Awesome showing from him and the Browns.
11. New York Jets Robert Saleh (Last Week #17)
What a win for Robert Saleh and the Jets, knocking off the Eagles despite missing two of their top cornerbacks—and, of course, their starting QB.
10. Baltimore Ravens John Harbaugh (Last Week #11)
Good bounce-back performance from John Harbaugh this week, as he got his team across the pond early and prepared to take on the Titans in England. The Ravens defense was flying all over the field and the offense is starting to come together. Harbaugh just needs to find a way to get some production out of his running backs.
9. Buffalo Bills Sean McDermott (Last Week #6)
After a shocking loss to the Jaguars, everyone expected Buffalo to come out a steamroll the Giants this week, but it was another weak performance. Fortunately for McDermott, they were able to hold on, but the Bills don’t look like a Super Bowl contender right now.
8. Jacksonville Jaguars Doug Pederson (Last Week #11)
Doug Pederson kept the good times rolling this week following their return from England, marching all over an overmatched Colts team.
7. Cincinnati Bengals Zac Taylor (Last Week #20)
Whatever Zac Taylor had cooked up for the beginning of the game, he needs to find a way to dial up more regularly, because the Bengals came out hot against Seattle in Week 6. It looks like this team is starting to hit its stride and Taylor deserves credit—hence his movement up the rankings.
6. Los Angeles Rams Sean McVay (Last Week #9)
Sean McVay has his juju back. The Rams are starting to really round into shape and look eerily similar to that squad we saw win the Super Bowl a couple of years back. The gameplan was fantastic this week and they dominated a strong Tampa Bay side.
5. Philadelphia Eagles Nick Sirianni (Last Week #4)
Nick Sirianni got utterly outcoached by Robert Saleh this week in what was ultimately the Eagles’ first loss of the season. That said, he’s done a great job thus far this year, so we’ll give him a little bit of grace for one bad week.
4. San Francisco 49ers Kyle Shanahan (Last Week #1)
Granted, Shanahan was up against it with a couple of key injuries on the offensive side of the ball, but San Fran was still handed its first loss by a depleted Browns team.
3. Kansas City Chiefs Andy Reid (Last Week #2)
It wasn’t the best performance out of Andy Reid and the Chiefs, who, let’s face it should’ve dominated the Broncos in this one. But with a couple of other top coaches’ teams losing, Reid’s top-3 positioning is still secure.
2. Miami Dolphins Mike McDaniel (Last Week #5)
Mike McDaniel has continued to do a great job with the Dolphins and had his team flying high again this week against an admittedly weak Panthers team.
There is no need to apologize for pummeling a bad team though!
1. Detroit Lions Dan Campbell (Last Week #3)
Don’t look now, but Dan Campbell is now in the driver’s seat for Coach of the Year honors and his Lions are looking like Super Bowl favorites. The team has a clear identity and is playing as good as football as anyone.
