Week 4 of the NFL season was another exciting one. With each passing game, the picture is becoming clearer as far as which coaches are in a position to lead their team to the playoffs and which are at risk of getting canned and everything in between.
Let’s take a look at where every NFL team’s head coach stacks up after Week 4.
32. Chicago Bears Matt Eberflus (Last Week #31)
Matt Eberflus is quickly becoming one of the most easily mocked coaches in the league. The Bears head coach seems to be completely out of his depths trying to guide this young team. What’s particularly concerning is that he’s a defensive specialist and recently took over defensive play calling, which has been an utter failure through two games.
31. Las Vegas Raiders Josh McDaniels (Last Week #32)
Another week, another Josh McDaniels loss. It is all the guy does as a head coach. He gets a slight pass for Week 4—since his starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo wasn’t available, but still, another uninspiring performance under his watch.
30. Carolina Panthers Frank Reich (Last Week #28)

It is unclear if the decision to play Bryce Young is coming from the top of the organization or if it is Frank Reich’s call, but if it is the latter, the Panthers’ head coach needs to make an adjustment stat. Carolina looks disorganized with the rookie under center and having him out there before he’s ready is going to do more to hurt his development than help it.
29. Cincinnati Bengals Zac Taylor (Last Week #26)
Granted, Zac Taylor’s job has gotten a whole lot harder with Joe Burrow fighting a nagging calf injury, but he has to find a way to get a more consistent performance out of the rest of the team if he wants to keep the Bengals afloat while his star quarterback recovers.
28. New York Giants Brian Daboll (Last Week #23)
This week was ugly for Brian Daboll and the Giants. His team got manhandled by the Seahawks on Monday Night Football and Daboll’s offense was unable to get anything going. It is starting to look like his decision to put all his eggs in the Daniel Jones basket might’ve been a mistake.
27. New England Patriots Bill Belichick (Last Week #18)
Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Week 4 was perhaps the worst of Bill Belichick’s illustrious career. He suffered his worst loss point deficit-wise of all-time, falling to the Cowboys 38-3.
26. Denver Broncos Sean Payton (Last Week #30)
Sean Payton is starting to climb the rankings after getting the Broncos in the win column for the first time this year, but he still has work to do if he wants to get back into the upper echelon where he resided during most of his tenure with the Saints.
25. Pittsburgh Steelers Mike Tomlin (Last Week #13)
It was a bad week for Mike Tomlin and the Steelers. After an inspiring win Week 3, the team came out completely flat against the Texans and got steamrolled 30-6.
24. Washington Commanders Ron Rivera (Last Week #29)
Kudos to Riverboat Ron for getting the Commanders all hyped up for a big NFC East matchup with the Eagles. It was a solid performance across the board and an overtime loss against Philly is nothing to hang one’s head about, but Rivera would’ve been wise to roll the dice and go for two down the stretch when he had a chance to win the game outright.
23. Los Angeles Chargers Brandon Staley (Last Week #27)
After a couple of embarrassing calls Week 3, Brandon Staley deserves some credit for calling a much better game this week against the Raiders. Also, bonus points for the way he got in the mix to defend his quarterback after he took a thumping down the sideline.
22. Green Bay Packers Matt LaFleur (Last Week #19)
Matt LeFleur made some questionable decisions against the Lions on Thursday Night Football. Dan Campbell was clear that he was going to run the ball all over them until they found a way to stop it and the Packers head coach never really adjusted.
21. New Orleans Saints Dennis Allen (Last Week #20)
Dennis Allen had his work cut out for him this week with an injured Derek Carr under center, but he also has no one to blame but himself for this. He has one of the best backups in the league in Jameis Winston, but decided to roll with his QB1 for reasons unbeknownst.
20. Minnesota Vikings Kevin O'Connell (Last Week #25)
The Vikings offense wasn’t what we expected this week against a weak Panthers D, but Kevin O’Connell needed a win in a bad way and he got it. That’s worth moving up a few spots in the rankings.
19. New York Jets Robert Saleh (Last Week #24)
Though it came in a losing effort, Robert Saleh deserves some credit for how his team performed against Kansas City on Monday Night Football. For the first time all season, Zach Wilson looked competent, dare I say, good, and the defense was flying all over the field as per usual, forcing Mahomes into multiple interceptions.
18. Cleveland Browns Kevin Stefanski (Last Week #10)
Kevin Stefanski’s team really laid an egg this week coming off a big win, but with his starting quarterback getting ruled out shortly before game time, he does get a slight pass. That said, it would’ve been nice to see him get more out of his defense when he needed them most.
17. Indianapolis Colts Shane Steichen (Last Week #14)
Steichen deserves some credit for leading his team to a comeback effort Week 4, but he needs to do a better job of making sure his youthful squad doesn’t come out flat after big wins going forward. Had Indy not dug itself in such a hole, it might’ve been able to win this one outright.
16. Houston Texans DeMeco Ryans (Last Week #22)
What DeMeco Ryans has done with this young Texans team this year has been extremely impressive. Their Week 4 thumping of an experienced Steelers team was just the latest in a series of strong performances.
15. Dallas Cowboys Mike McCarthy (Last Week #21)
Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys looked extremely back this week. With one or two more big wins, McCarthy will find himself back in the top 10.
14. Arizona Cardinals Jonathan Gannon (Last Week #12)
Jonathan Gannon had his work cut out for him against San Francisco this week and all things considered, his young team played pretty well. After all, they were supposed to be tanking this year and they were at least competitive.
13. Atlanta Falcons Arthur Smith (Last Week #8)
Although Arthur Smith and the Falcons have done well to work around the absence of any real production from the quarterback the first few weeks of the season but is going to start catching some side eye from his players if he doesn’t at least see what Taylor Heinicke looks like in that offense soon.
12. Tennessee Titans Mike Vrabel (Last Week #17)
Every time people are ready to write off Mike Vrabel, he finds a way to get his team back in the win column. That was a vintage performance from the Vrabel-led Titans. Perhaps hope is not lost this year!
11. Jacksonville Jaguars Doug Pederson (Last Week #16)
Doug Pederson’s Jags played well this week in their second home, London. Jacksonville’s defense looked solid against an admittedly one-dimensional Falcons offense, but still, kudos to them for capitalizing on the opportunity.
10. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Todd Bowles (Last Week #15)
Don’t look now, but Todd Bowles has cracked the top 10! The Tampa Bay Bucs got a big win this week against New Orleans and Bowles has done a great job revamping that defense after a tough year in 2022.
9. Seattle Seahawks Pete Carroll (Last Week #11)
Pete Carroll had the Seahawks flying high on Monday Night Football. Seattle came ready to play and even fought through some adversity with Geno Smith getting sidelined for a portion of the game.
8. Los Angeles Rams Sean McVay (Last Week #7)
Sean McVay has done a nice job of keeping the Rams offense moving with Cooper Kupp sidelined. He does get docked one slot though, for nearly blowing a big halftime lead against the Colts.
9. Baltimo7. Baltimore Ravens John Harbaugh (Last Week #9) Ravens John Harbaugh
Big win for Coach Harbaugh this week as he got the Ravens back on track after an embarrassing overtime loss in Week 3. He did a great job capitalizing on the absence of Deshaun Watson.
6. Detroit Lions Dan Campbell (Last Week #6)
Dan Campbell has the Lions looking like they are for real. He’s created an identity for that team and it was on full display Thursday Night with the physical beatdown they put on the Packers.
5. Miami Dolphins Mike McDaniel (Last Week #2)
It would’ve been really hard for Mike McDaniel to improve upon their Week 3 performance against Denver, but it was disappointing to see how much his team struggled against Buffalo in a huge matchup.
McDaniel needs to get the Fins back on track this week otherwise his skid in the rankings could turn into a slide.
4. Philadelphia Eagles Nick Sirianni (Last Week #4)
His team may have come out a little bit flat against Washington, but Nick Sirianni did well to adjust and led an impressive second-half comeback against a tough Washington defense.
3. Buffalo Bills Sean McDermott (Last Week #5)
Sean McDermott really has the Bills rolling now. Buffalo was fired up and had a fantastic gameplan for the Dolphins in a pivotal matchup between the two top teams in the AFC East.
2. Kansas City Chiefs Andy Reid (Last Week #3)
Though it wasn’t overly pretty, Andy Reid did a great job scheming opportunities for the Chiefs offense on a night when Patrick Mahomes didn’t have his best stuff—and he did so against a nasty Jets D.
1. San Francisco 49ers Kyle Shanahan (Last Week #1)
With the way he has his team playing, Kyle Shanahan may end up fixed to this number-one slot all season. The Niners are a juggernaut on both sides of the ball and he has them looking like a Super Bowl favorite.
