They say that in the NFL teams only go as far as their quarterback takes them, but in many cases, the quarterbacks only goes as far as their head coach allows them to.
32. Las Vegas Raiders Josh McDaniels
Things are not looking good for the latest Bill Belichick disciple to wander out into the desert on his own. McDaniels’ offense looked terrible against the Steelers this week and that team continues to flounder under his leadership.
31. Chicago Bears Matt Eberflus
2023 has been an outright disaster for the Chicago and its head coach Matt Eberflus. Justin Fields is regressing under his tutelage and the team looks out of sync across the board.
30. Denver Broncos Sean Payton
A nice, fat 70-20 loss to Tua and the Dolphins is a exclamation mark on the rough start for Sean Payton in his first year back in the NFL coaching. It appears he isn’t built to be the Russell Wilson whisperer we all took him to be.

29. Washington Commanders Ron Rivera
Ron Rivera got his squad off to a good start this year, but after the embarrassing loss to the Buffalo Bills they were due for a drop.
28. Carolina Panthers Frank Reich
Frank Reich is in a tough spot with the level of talent on his roster, but the team is playing hard for him at least. Either way, 0-3 is 0-3.
27. Los Angeles Chargers Brandon Staley
Brandon Staley gets a slight bump for saving his job Week 3 with a last second win against the Vikings—even though it is very much in question how much credit he deserves for the win with the weak decision making he exhibited down the stretch.
26. Cincinnati Bengals Zac Taylor
1-2 is not where Zac Taylor or the Bengals thought that they would be three weeks into the season, but that said, Taylor has done a nice job keeping the squad locked in while Joe Burrow’s calf heals up. After the defense he cooked up for the Rams on Monday night, his stock may be on the rise soon.
25. Minnesota Vikings Kevin O'Connell
The only saving grace for Kevin O’Connell after the Vikings 0-3 start is that he has the world’s best scapegoat in Kirk Cousins under center, who will likely be on the chopping block before he is.
24. New York Jets Robert Saleh
With the gutting injury to Aaron Rodgers, Robert Saleh has his work cut out for him in 2023, but the Jets are going to need more creativity out of its coach if it wants to weasel its way back into the playoff picture. If Saleh continues to play the same old song with Zach Wilson and that offense, he’ll no one to blame but himself when it goes belly up.
23. New York Giants Brian Daboll
No head coach’s stock was higher after 2022, but it has been a tough start to the season for Brian Daboll and the New York Giants. His only saving grace is that they avoided disaster against the Cardinals Week 2.
22. Houston Texans DeMeco Ryans
The Houston Texans have been surprisingly decent the past couple of weeks after a tough season opener. DeMeco Ryans deserves some credit for getting his rookie QB, CJ Stroud, off to a good start.
21. Dallas Cowboys Mike McCarthy
People were singing Mike McCarthy’s praises left, right, and center after the way the Cowboys started the season, seemingly forgetting the team’s that their admittedly dominant performance came against. The Dallas coach’s stock has come plummeting back down to earth after the team laid an egg against the Cardinals Week 3.
20. New Orleans Saints Dennis Allen
The Saints were one of the surprising 2-0 starts this year—and it looked like they were on the way to 3-0 until that shocking collapse against the Packers this week. Dennis Allen would be way higher had that game not ended in such embarrassing fashion.
19. Green Bay Packers Matt LaFleur
Year 1 in the post-Aaron Rodgers era has gotten off to a better start than most in the media predicted and Matt LeFleur deserves a pat on the back for putting his first-year starting quarterback, Jordan Love in a position to succeed
18. New England Patriots Bill Belichick
Bill Belichick is still one of the best coaches around. He can take away the opposing team’s best option like no other, but at some point, he’s going to take some blame for the bizarre ways that the Patriots continually lose games in.
17. Tennessee Titans Mike Vrabel
Mike Vrabel has been one of the most consistent forces in coaching the last few year, but it looks like he will have his work cut out for him this year in Tennessee recreating the office with an ageing Derrick Henry and a lack of talent at the quarterback position.
16. Jacksonville Jaguars Doug Pederson
Doug Pederson is definitively one of the best coaches in the league, but with how up and down the Jags have been thus far, he has to be listed amongst the middle of the pack.
15. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Todd Bowles
The Buccaneers have been a pleasant surprise in year one of the post-Tom Brady era. Bowles and his staff deserve extra credit for the early success of the Baker Mayfield reclamation project.
14. Indianapolis Colts Shan Steichen
The Colts have looked surprisingly competent under first year head coach, Shane Steichen. Not only did he set up rookie QB, Anthony Richardson, for success—he has done well to adjust to the change in personnel shifting the game plan with Gardner Minshew now under center.
13. Pittsburgh Steelers Mike Tomlin
Though Mike Tomlin can make some questionable decisions, there is no doubt that he can still motivate a team with the best of them. He’s done a great job through three games with a scrappy, young Steelers team.
12. Arizona Cardinals Jonathan Gannon
Expectations were low as they get for Jonathan Gannon in his first season as an NFL head coach, but the Cardinals have looked shockingly decent with him calling the shots through three games.
11. Seattle Seahawks Pete Carroll
Pete Carroll has long been one of the best coaches in the NFL, especially when it comes to motivating young players. He’s done another great just in 2023.
10. Cleveland Browns Kevin Stefanski
Though Kevin Stefanski has a tendency to make some questionable decisions in the heat of the moment, he’s done a good job so far this year. He secured a big win Week 1 against the Bengals and has navigating the Nick Chubb injury well.
9. Baltimore Ravens John Harbaugh
Though the Ravens had a tough let down against the Colts in Week 3, Harbaugh and his bunch have looked to be in lockstep for the most part this year. He is still one of the best coaches in the game.
8. Atlanta Falcons Arthur Smith
No one is confusing the Falcons with serious Super Bowl contenders, but Arthur Smith has really built a culture and a team identity there that could and should pay dividends once they figure out the quarterback position.
7. Los Angeles Rams Sean McVay
After a tough 2022, the Rams had doubters all over the map at the beginning of this year. McVay has really answered the bell so far, particularly with how he’s schemed the offense around the Cooper Kupp injury.
6. Detroit Lions Dan Campbell
Dan Campbell and the Lions are off to a great start this year. He is one of the best motivators in the league and it shows with how he has his team playing.
5. Buffalo Bills Sean McDermott
Sean McDermott has done well to get his team back on track after a tough opening night loss to an Aaron Rodgers-less Jets team. He deserves a lot of credit for making sure that the ship hasn’t continued to steer off course.
4. Philadelphia Eagles Nick Sirianni
All Nick Sirianni and the Eagles do is win games. His defense is looking ferocious and their run heavy offense continues to wear on opposing defenses.
3. Kansas City Chiefs Andy Reid
What else can you say about Andy Reid and the Chiefs? Yes, they took a tough loss opening night, but he’s already finding success with essentially all new faces at the wide receiver position.
2. Miami Dolphins Mike McDaniel
After a 70-20 win, McDaniel sitting near the top of the power rankings shouldn’t be a shock. His offense has looked scary good through three games.
1. San Francisco 49ers Kyle Shanahan
Kyle Shanahan has his 49ers playing scary good football thus far. The defense has been a buzzsaw and with Brock Purdy back at the helm, the offense is firing on all cylinders.
