The Los Angeles Rams are bringing back an old friend.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Rams announced that they have signed veteran running back Sony Michel, who spent the 2021 season with the Super Bowl 56 champions.
Michel, who also won a Super Bowl 53 ring with the New England Patriots in his rookie season, spent the 2022 season with the Los Angeles Chargers. The 2018 first-round pick appeared in 10 games for the Bolts, recording 106 rushing yards on 36 carries.
Ahead of the 2021 season, the Rams acquired Michel from the Patriots for two late-round draft picks. Michel rushed for 845 yards and four touchdowns while also accumulating 21 receptions for 128 yards and one receiving touchdown.
The Rams are coming off a disappointing season in which they finished with a 5-12 record, setting a record for the most losses by a defending Super Bowl champion. The offense, hit hard by the injury bug, finished 27th in scoring with a putrid average of 18.1 points per game.
LA’s running back depth chart also consists of Cam Akers (presumably the RB1 for 2023), Kyren Williams, Zach Evans and Ronnie Rivers. Given Michel’s experience and knowledge of the Rams’ offense, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he moved ahead to the RB2 spot on the depth chart.
