Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers was one of the biggest names mentioned in trade rumors ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.
But when all was said and done, the third-year running back still found himself on the Rams roster. And so, the 23-year-old will remain part of the team’s Super Bowl 56 championship defense the rest of the way.
The Rams, who were in on the Christian McCaffrey sweepstakes, reportedly turned down multiple offers for Akers. It was suggested that he actually requested a trade from the team, but Akers poured cold water over the speculation, via ESPN’s Sarah Barshop.
In five games this season, Akers has 151 rushing yards and one touchdown. Darrell Henderson is the team’s rushing leader with 197 yards and two touchdowns in seven games.
The Rams’ rode a prolific offense to a Super Bowl 56 title last season, but the group has surprisingly been among football’s worst this year. Heading into Week 9, the Rams have averaged just 16.9 points per game, 28th in the league.
After releasing 2017 Offensive Player of the Year Todd Gurley in the 2020 offseason, the Rams began retooling their backfield. They drafted Akers with the No. 52 selection, and he wound up sharing the workload with Henderson.

Akers was expected to miss the entire 2021 season after suffering a torn Achilles during offseason training. But he made a remarkably quick recovery and returned in time for the team’s Week 18 regular season finale against the San Francisco 49ers.
Akers appeared in all four Rams’ playoff games last season, recording 172 rushing yards and 76 receiving yards in four games. Los Angeles defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 to win Super Bowl 56 inside their home venue of SoFi Stadium.
At 3-4, the Rams have a chance to get back to .500 this Sunday when they take on Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
