A blockbuster trade proposal has the Las Vegas Raiders landing one of the NFL’s best clipboard holders as insurance for Jimmy Garoppolo.
In free agency, the Raiders signed Garoppolo to a three-year contract worth $72.75 million. But last month, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported that there’s a waiver regarding Garoppolo’s foot injury in the contract.
The clause allows the Raiders to outright release Garoppolo without owing him any money. There haven’t been any indicators that Las Vegas is looking to cut ties with the 31-year-old, but Jimmy G’s injury history means the Raiders should definitely look at quality insurance plans.
At Heavy.com, Evan Reier proposed the idea of the Raiders trading for Dallas Cowboys’ backup signal-caller Cooper Rush:
“If the Raiders don’t have the resources to shore up their QB situation with a bigger name, trading Rush could be the sweet spot for the two sides. Dallas could potentially land a player to help with a problem area or a decent pick while the team is in “win now” mode with an aggressive move.
Rush stepped up in a big way in 2022 — he started five of the nine games in which he played (five games was his previous peak), completed 94 passes out of 162 attempts (more than triple his previous high on both counts) and passed for 5 touchdowns — so the Cowboys may be wary about trading him. But they also have (Will) Grier, a veteran backup who knows how to step in and step up when needed.”
Rush won his lone start for the Cowboys in 2021 with Dak Prescott sidelined, throwing a game-winning touchdown to Amari Cooper in the final minute against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 8.

The 29-year-old saved the Cowboys’ season with Prescott out for five games, winning four of five starts while tossing five touchdowns against three interceptions. Dallas went on to rack up a second straight 12-win season.
Rush would be a nice insurance option for the Raiders, but there aren’t any hints that Dallas is looking to trade him at this time. For now, the Raiders will likely continue to roll with the QB depth chart of Garoppolo, Brian Hoyer and rookie Aidan O’Connell.
