New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas is a name to watch in the trade market over the coming weeks.
Thomas as once in the conversation for the NFL’s best wide receiver, but injuries have limited him to 10 total games over the last three years. He played seven games in 2020, missed all of 2021 with an ankle injury and appeared in just three games last season.
Given Thomas’ injury history and expensive salary, the cap-strapped Saints could very well decide to trade or release the 2019 Offensive Player of the Year. And if Thomas agrees to a restructured deal, there should be a handful of interested teams.
Seth Trachtman of YardBarker wrote a list of 25 bold predictions for the upcoming offseason. One of Trachtman’s predictions has the Saints trading the former Pro Bowler to the New England Patriots:
“Bill Belichick is all about finding value in the offseason, and Thomas presents an opportunity to buy low. He’s played a total of 10 games over the last three seasons due to injuries, but Thomas is still only 30 and had a historic first four NFL seasons. New England desperately needs wideout help and could find a great upside with Thomas.”
Indeed, Belichick has a great history of adding seemingly past-their-prime veterans, only to get more productive years out of them. Randy Moss, Corey Dillon and Rodney Harrison are the best examples there.
Thomas did have three touchdowns in the Saints’ first two games of 2022, so it’s obvious that the big-play ability is still there. Will the Patriots or somebody else take a chance on him? Or will the Saints hold out hope for a healthy year from him in 2023?
