There is still plenty of focus on Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Three options are on the table for the four-time league MVP: Retirement, a return to Green Bay or a trade to another team. Rodgers recently completed his “darkness retreat”, which he hopes will have helped influence a decision on his future.
Over at Heavy Sports, Max Dible proposed an interesting trade scenario in which the Packers would trade the franchise legend to his home state team, the San Francisco 49ers:
“The 49ers will need a higher-end pick if they hope to land Rodgers, which means the team would probably need to deal Lance to a franchise like the Carolina Panthers that would be likely to part with its second-round selection (No. 39 overall) for a shot to mold the inexperienced and injured Lance into a legitimate NFL starter.
In turn, the Niners can take that No. 39 pick, package it with the 99th overall selection in the third round this year and their own second-round selection in next year’s draft (likely somewhere in the range of 60th overall) and send all three to Green Bay for a couple years at the end of Rodgers’ career.
While aforementioned proposal is comprised of a great many moving pieces, it is precisely the sort of offer that could get a deal done for Rodgers if competition for his services is limited and the Packers are truly ready to move into the next era of Green Bay football.”
The 49ers will be moving on from veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, who’s slated to enter free agency next month. Trey Lance missed all but two games last season because of an ankle fracture, and 2022 hero Brock Purdy suffered a UCL injury in the NFC Championship Game that is expected to keep him out of action until August.
San Francisco has two promising young quarterback options there in Lance (the No. 3 pick of the 2021 NFL Draft) and Purdy, who won all five of his regular season starts as well as two playoff games.
Would the 49ers really be aggressive and go all-in to acquire Rodgers from one of their bigger rivals, should he hit the trade block? We’ve seen crazier things happen in football, so stay tuned.
