With Tom Brady retired (apparently, for real this time) Tampa Bay Buccaneers are on the long list of teams that need a new starting quarterback.
The Buccaneers could give 2021 first-round pick Kyle Trask a look, but the former Florida Gators star has only completed nine passes at the NFL level. With the No. 19 pick in the draft, the Bucs aren’t in range to get a top QB prospect like C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young or Will Levis.
For GM Jason Licht, his best bet is to sign or trade for a new starting quarterback in 2023. J.C. Cornell of The Draft Network proposed an interesting scenario that would see the Buccaneers trade for Chicago Bears’ quarterback Justin Fields:
Chicago holds the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft. Keep in mind that GM Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus weren’t here when the Bears drafted Fields 11th overall in 2021. If they don’t view him as their best long-term option, Fields will likely get traded — and Chicago should be keen to draft Young or Stroud first overall.
If the Bears decide to continue building around Fields, there’s a high chance they’ll trade away the top selection to a QB-needy team.
Fields would be an enticing fit on a Tampa Bay team that had football’s worst rushing attack in 2022. Fields would single-handedly change that, and of course, having Mike Evans and Chris Godwin as his to-go pass-catchers could help the Ohio State product take his game to another level.
