The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced a significant change to their election process that will be music to the ears of former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
As noted by Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Bill Belichick could enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame as soon as 2026 thanks to a series of rule changes approved by the Canton board:
“Previously, coaches had to be out of the game for five seasons before they could be inducted into the Hall of Fame. But the new rule announced today is that coaches only have to be out of the game for one season before they are eligible for Hall of Fame selection. The selection process for the Class of 2025 has already begun, so Belichick won’t be eligible to be inducted next summer, but he will be eligible for the Class of 2026 if he doesn’t get another coaching job before then.”
Belichick and the Patriots parted ways in January after 23 years together. He crafted a legacy as the greatest NFL coach of all time, leading New England to nine AFC Championships and six Super Bowl titles during his tenure.
Surprisingly, Belichick was passed over by other NFL teams in the 2024 head coach hiring cycle. The Atlanta Falcons were the only team to interview Belichick, but they wound up hiring ex-Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.
So if Belichick gets his gold jacket and returns to the sidelines? As Smith pointed out, it’s possible that a Hall of Famer will be also be an active NFL head coach.
