The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are beginning life without Tom Brady following the 45-year-old’s decision to retire earlier this week. But they’re now thought to be the favorites to land Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Carr.
Carr was benched by the Las Vegas Raiders toward the end of the season but still made the Pro Bowl – his fourth – which could increase his value as he had a particularly remarkable outing.
The Raiders are keen on severing ties with the signal-caller but have to act fast as his salary will become fully guaranteed on February 15.
According to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, the Bucs are widely expected to land the former second-round pick.
“So, the buzz here at the Senior Bowl, I’m in Mobile, Ala. by the way, the buzz is connecting them [Bucs] with Derek Carr,” Robinson said on the You Pod to Win the Game podcast this week. “Like, that’s probably the Derek Carr destination. I only believe that if the Bucs are like, ‘Let’s not reboot completely. Let’s not just nuke it right now and start all over again. Let’s see if we can maybe put this back together again.’”
Per NFL Network’s Jom Trotter, The Raiders are unlikely to trade Carr and will release him instead as teams could ask for two other players if they go the exchange route.
