One AFC team heavily linked to New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is reportedly out of the sweepstakes for the legendary head coach.
With the club headed for a third losing season in four years, many expect the Patriots to move on from Belichick after this year. New England (2-9) is on pace for its worst record since 1992 (that team went 2-14), and the club is about to experience its fifth straight year without a postseason win.
The Los Angeles Chargers have been widely linked to Belichick in recent weeks, but one reporter claims that the 71-year-old will never come to La La Land.
Speaking to Tom Giles of NBC Sports Boston, Derek Togerson of NBC 7 San Diego explained that the Chargers won’t hire Belichick due largely to what will likely be an astronomical asking price.
“I’m here to tell you he will never coach the Chargers,” Togerson said. “Because the Chargers are not going to pay a coach. Look at this offseason. Sean Payton was basically begging to come here and coach the Chargers.”
The Chargers wouldn’t meet Payton’s asking price, and he wound up being hired by the Denver Broncos. Togerson noted that the salaries of previous Bolts head coaches in Mike McCoy and Anthony Lynn and current HC Brandon Staley combine for around $11.5 million annually.

Togerson also said that Chargers owner Dean Spanos thinks highly of Patriots owner Robert Kraft. As well, Togerson thinks Kraft would be reluctant to let Belichick go to a team with as much talent as the Chargers.
The Bolts and Patriots meet at Gillette Stadium this Sunday.
