Journeyman NFL quarterback Nathan Peterman has signed with an NFC team, two days before the NFL Kickoff Game.
According to Atlanta Falcons beat reporter Terrin Waack, the team has signed Nathan Peterman to their practice squad. The Falcons released veteran offensive tackle Julién Davenport from the practice squad to make room for Peterman.
Kirk Cousins is the Falcons’ starting quarterback, having signed a four-year deal worth $180 million in free agency. In a surprise move, the team also used the No. 8 pick on Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr.
Penix selection wasn’t expected to be drafted that high, and the Falcons had other pressing needs on their roster (defensive line, cornerback, linebacker, etc). Cousins himself admitted that he was surprised by the Penix selection, though he’s handled the entire matter professionally.
So Nathan Peterman is now the No. 3 quarterback on the Falcons roster. The team will open their 2024 season this Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium against Russell Wilson and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This game marks the return of former Falcons head coach Arthur Smith, who was hired as the Steelers’ offensive coordinator after Atlanta fired him in January.
Nathan Peterman spent the previous two seasons on the Chicago Bears’ roster. He appeared in five games and made one starter in 2022, totaling 14 completions on 25 pass attempts for one touchdown and an interception.
A New Chapter In Nathan Peterman’s Career
Peterman hasn’t had a successful career as a backup quarterback, but he has been widely popular among fans since his first NFL start in 2017.
Starting in place of a struggling Tyrod Taylor, Peterman threw five interceptions in a road game against the Los Angeles Chargers. That forced head coach Sean McDermott to eventually go back to Taylor, who did just enough to help Buffalo end an 18-year playoff drought.
Peterman remains a fan favorite seven years later. He lands with his fifth NFL team after previously spending time with the Bills, Bears, Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints.
