Earlier this year the whole football world was shocked to hear about the untimely death of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins. On April 9th, just a few weeks before his 25th birthday, Haskins was tragically struck by a truck while attempting to cross Interstate 595 near Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
It was recently announced that every player to suit up for the Steelers in the upcoming season will wear a #3 decal, the quarterbacks jersey number, on the back of their helmet to honor him.
After being drafted by Washington with the 15th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Haskins had a rocky start to his career, only lasting 2 years in the nations capital and appearing in only 16 games. After being cut by the Commanders, the Steelers took a chance on him by signing him to one year contracts in both 2021 and 2022, but he never actually appeared in a game.
Pittsburgh’s home opener is scheduled for Sunday September 18 against the New England Patriots, where in addition to the helmet decal, there is sure to be a tribute to Dwayne Haskins.
Steelers fans were glad to see the team honoring Haskins:
