Usually when you hear about an athlete being sent home from practice, it’s for something bad they did. Najee Harris was sent home, but he did nothing wrong.
The former Alabama running back is determined to not let his work ethic be a reason he doesn’t succeed as a Pittsburgh Steelers rookie, but it became too much as he was sent home for working way too hard.
Steelers running backs coach Eddie Faulkner confirmed the report on a conference call that he told the 24th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to go home during camp because he was watching too much film.
“It is true,” Faulkner said during a recent press conference. “Number one, and let me tell you why it’s true because I’m for all the hard work and the extra. I’m all here for that. I love it. But he also has to learn, part of Najee and getting to know Najee in the draft processes, he also has to learn how to give himself breaks too. He works his butt off and sometimes it’s a reward like, ‘Hey man, go home, relax, watch TV, do something different than the football.’
“So with him, being the kind of guy he is and is engaged and always after it and always wanting to do drills and always wanting to be developed, sometimes I’m trying to help teach him, sometimes you gotta take a deep breath. So yes, that is true.”
Harris had a career year in his final season at Alabama. He finished with 1,466 yards, 23 touchdowns, 5.8 yards per carry, 43 catches, 425 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns. In four collegiate seasons, Harris had 3,843 yards, 46 touchdowns, six yards per carry, 80 catches, 781 receiving yards and 11 receiving touchdowns.
