The Las Vegas Raiders released veteran quarterback Derek Carr earlier this week, making the 31-year-old free to sign with a new team whenever he wishes.
Carr was mentioned aplenty in trade rumors, but the four-time Pro Bowler wouldn’t waive his no-trade clause. As such, the Raiders had no choice but to release their starting quarterback of nine years from his contract.
The New Orleans Saints have been frequently mentioned as a potential landing spot for Carr. The New York Jets, Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Washington Commanders are among the other teams that make sense for Carr.
But what about the Pittsburgh Steelers, who won nine games last season with the duo of Mitch Trubisky and Kenny Pickett? The idea seems far-fetched, but it didn’t stop FOX Sports radio host Jason Smith from suggesting Steel City as a potential landing spot for Carr:
There’s a case to be made that the Steelers would be a better team in 2023 with Carr. But this team spent a 2022 first-round pick on Pickett, and it’s hard to envision them giving up on him right away.
Nor do they have a reason too, quite frankly. Pickett won seven of his 12 starts and improved as the season went along. Surely, the Steelers are Pickett’s team heading into 2023.
