It seems like JuJu Smith-Schuster just got to Pittsburgh not too long ago, but now he is headed in his final year of his current contract, and it might be his last season with the team.
Ed Bouchette of The Athletic said the Steelers are “not likely” to re-sign Smith-Schuster, while also stating the same for running back James Conner who does not appear to be in their future plans.
“A pair of Pittsburgh Steelers explosive offensive players are heading into their contract year and could be looking to join new teams in 2021. In a Q&A session with Steelers fans, Ed Bouchette of The Athletic said that he believes it is “not likely” that the team re-signs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and running back James Conner.
More precisely, when asked about the potential of Pittsburgh re-signing the players, Bouchette said “no” in regards to Conner and “not likely” regarding Smith-Schuster.”
In 2018, Smith-Schuster had a breakout season as he hauled in 111 receptions for 1,426 yards and seven touchdowns.
Antonio Brown would see himself off the team after that season and Juju became the No. 1 WR. His season did not go as planned as he missed 4 games due to injuries and he wasn’t exactly spectacular when on the field and healthy.
He finished the 2019 season with just 42 receptions for 552 yards and three touchdowns. It should also be noted that he spent the year catching passes from Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges, two quarterbacks that will likely prove to be backups in theri career.
Maybe a good year with a healthy Ben Roethlisberger returning under center might change the team’s mind.
