Former Steelers safety John “Paul” Martha died Saturday in Pittsburgh, the University of Pittsburgh announced.
He was 80-years-old.
Martha was an All-American in college at Pittsburgh. After spending the first year with the Panthers as a quarterback, Martha spent his final two seasons with the team. He tallied over 350 yards rushing and 245 yards receiving in each of his last two years at Pitt.
Martha was selected by the Steelers in the first round of the 1964 NFL Draft. In the same year, he was selected by the Bills in the ninth round of the AFL Draft.
Martha spent the first six years of his pro football career as a running back for the Steelers before spending his final season in Denver with the Broncos.
Following his career, he returned to the league and became the executive vice president of the 49ers.
