Andrea Thome, wife of Hall of Famer and former Philadelphia Phillies star Jim Thome, took a stand on Twitter this week in light of the Cleveland Browns not only trading for Deshaun Watson but giving him a massive guaranteed contract.
“Officially cancelled our Browns season tickets today and asked for a refund as they were paid in full. Very sad after 40 years as a fan, but this is my line in the sand. I believe women. Especially when there are 22 of them. That press conference did nothing to change my mind,” she wrote.
“They may not give us a refund. But I sent the letter today. If Browns won’t refund—-I will auction off every single game and publicly donate every cent to different women’s crisis charities in N.E. Ohio, raising awareness week by week during the season.”
22 lawsuits were filed against Watson by numerous women who allege that he sexually harassed or assaulted them. Two different Texas grand juries have declined to indict him on criminal charges, but he is still facing civil lawsuits regarding sexual assault and misconduct.
Not only that, the NFL is still not done with their investigation, and he is expected to be suspended.
Watson signed a four-year contract valued at $156M in 2020, sat out all 2021 because of the allegations while being paid, and then the Browns signed him to a new contract for five years and $230M guaranteed, which is the most guaranteed money in NFL history.
