Philip Rivers has taken a bunch of criticism over the past few days over his comments about Melvin Gordon and his holdout from Chargers’ training camp.
He showed very much that he is willing to make a few sacrifices to try and bring Gordon back into the fold. During an interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio, the Los Angeles Chargers quarterback indicated he’s willing to play out the final year of his contract and even seemed open to the idea of leaving money on the table this year for Gordon.
Hey, if it does, awesome. You want our team to have the best chance to go win. Hopefully we see Melvin soon, certainly [he] adds a great deal to our team…He’s a big part of our team, and so we hope to get him back soon and get him out here soon. When we see him, we’ll be fired up, and until then we’ll go prepare like crazy [like] he’s not gonna be here. But you certainly pull for him and hope everything gets worked out.
The 37-year-old Rivers will earn $11 million in base salary in 2019. He completed 68.3 percent of his passes for 4,308 yards and 32 touchdowns during the 2018 season, leading the squad to a 12-4 record and a playoff victory.
Gordon is slated to earn $5.6 million in the final year of his rookie deal and is reportedly looking for the type of guaranteed dollars that David Johnson and Le’Veon Bell received.
