After spending 17 years as a professional football player, Philip Rivers has made the transition to being a head coach.
Rivers, the long-time quarterback of the Chargers, made his coaching debut for St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, AL on Friday. The Cardinals took on Alma Bryant High School in a spring game.
Rivers took over the program officially after retiring in January.
“I’ve played a lot of football in the last 20 years and some of my favorite memories are Friday nights,” Rivers said, according to NBC 15 News.
In his 14 seasons with the Chargers — Rivers racked up 59,271 passing yards and 397 touchdown passes, first in franchise history in both categories. He ended his career with the team at 123-101, while making the postseason six times and going 5-6 in 11 games.
In his final NFL season, Rivers led Indianapolis to an 11-5 record and a trip to the playoffs with 24 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions.
