After losing Aaron Rodgers for the remainder of the 2023 season with a torn Achilles, the New York Jets are reportedly eyeing another one of the game’s most prolific pocket passers of the 21st century.
According to a report from ML Football, the Jets are interested in bringing in retired quarterback Philip Rivers, who last played for the Indianapolis Colts in 2020. The report noted it’s unclear if the eight-time Pro Bowler has interest in coming back.
Rivers will be 42 years of age in December, but it seems as though he’s kept himself in excellent shape during retirement. After all, San Francisco 49ers’ head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed last month that they were considering signing Rivers for Super Bowl 58, had they ousted the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game.
Rivers played 16 seasons for the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers from 2004 to 2019, taking over as the starter after Drew Brees’ departure in 2006. Rivers led the Bolts to six playoff appearances (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2013 and 2018), going as far as the AFC Championship Game in 2007.
Rivers led the Colts to an 11-5 record in 2020, but his last hope at a Super Bowl ended with a loss to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card Round. For his career, Rivers had 63,440 passing yards and 421 touchdowns.
