Former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers has denied reaching out to the Dolphins and 49ers to offer his services following Rich Eisen’s claiming that was the case.
Eisen, who revealed the biggest rumors he heard circulating at the NFL Scouting Combine, mentioned Rivers as he disclosed having heard that the ex-QB attempted to make a comeback, contacting the aforementioned teams to let them know he could sign on with them for the playoffs.
Both the Dolphins and Niners were in a bit of a jam heading into the postseason given the injuries to their starters but such a move would have made more sense for Miami as San Francisco ended up unveiling a fella named Brock Purdy.
Rivers has responded to the claims, insisting he never reached out to anyone, though teams did reach out to him.
“I heard from a couple of teams just kind of checking in,” he told AL.com. “I didn’t contact anyone, and I’m not going anywhere. I think maybe some teams, with some guys going down, may have been just looking for a contingency plan, but nothing came of it.”
Rivers did not say which teams contacted him but did reveal that he was never approached by the Dolphins.

The 41-year-old, who spent 16 seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, played out his last NFL term with the Colts. He told the publication there was a time when he felt like a return was possible but is sure his career is well and truly over now.
“I think in my mind in the last couple of years if a team had needed me, I might have had six or eight games left in me, but I’m not going into this fall thinking the same,” he added. “I think it’s done.”
