Washington will no longer be going with the nickname the Redskins at some point this year after presure continues to mount from sponsors who are calling for the change to happen.
Via Rick Maese of the Washington Post, Pepsi issued a statement Friday encouraging Dan Snyder to do that which he used to say he’d never do.
“We have been in conversations with the NFL and Washington management for a few weeks about this issue,” a PepsiCo spokesperson said. “We believe it is time for a change. We are pleased to see the steps the team announced today, and we look forward to continued partnership.”
Pepsi’s statement comes on the heels of the team announcing “a thorough review” of the name after FedEx asked for it to change and Nike removed all of their team apparel from their site.
The report by Adweek says three different letters signed by 87 investment firms and shareholders were addressed last week to the three major corporations.
Those investment firms and shareholders are worth a collective $620 billion.
