A Lamar Jackson trade could actually be happening, but at least five teams have already taken their names out of the running.
Several teams could make a move for Lamar Jackson now that the Ravens have placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on the former MVP. The non-exclusive franchise tag allows the tagged player to negotiate an offer sheet with another team.
The Ravens would then have to decide if they want to match that offer sheet to keep Jackson in purple or decline it, which would send whichever club involved their 2023 and 2024 first-round picks to the Ravens to be able to finalize the deal with Lamar Jackson.
Mike Kadlick of CLNS Media is reporting this week that the New England Patriots “absolutely should/would” sign Jackson to an offer sheet and could “feasibly do it.”
This would be such a Bill Belichick move, too. When no one is expecting it, he pounces in and grabs a former MVP and puts his franchise right back into the conversation of competing for a Super Bowl just a few years after Losing Tom Brady.
It’s unknown what the Pats think about Jackson at this point and if they’d be willing to offer him a fully guaranteed contract, but it would not hurt to at least talk to him. If it’s too much, the team could very well just stick with Mac Jones for another year.
