A former star NCAA quarterback who went unselected in this year’s draft is set to work out for an NFL team.
Citing sources, the @_MLFootball account reports that the New England Patriots are working out former Elon quarterback Matthew McKay on Monday.
The 6-foot-4, 225-pound McKay is a native of Raleigh, North Carolina. He played two seasons for the NC State Wolfpack (2018 and 2019), before transferring over to the Montana State Bobcats for the 2020 season.
McKay didn’t see action that season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In his lone season with the Bobcats, McKay showed promise by completing 62.2 percent of his pass attempts for 2,021 yards and 17 touchdowns against just three interceptions.
McKay went on to play for the Elon Phoenix, where he turned in his best collegiate season. McKay finished the 2022 campaign with 2,690 passing yards and 21 touchdowns against only four interceptions to go along with 458 rushing yards and three rushing scores.
Barring any major surprises, 2021 first-round pick Mac Jones will be the Patriots’ Week 1 starter for their home game against the Philadelphia Eagles. But second-stringer and sophomore Bailey Zappe, who won both his starts last year, could take over as the starter if Jones’ inconsistent play carries over to 2023.
