So much for that.
The New England Patriots managed to convince former Saints tight end Benjamin Watson to come out of retirement and replace Rob Gronkowski in their offense. Now they’ll have to find someone to replace Watson, who was suspended for the first four games of the 2019 NFL season after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.
Watson made the announcement himself on Sunday via his Twitter page. He claimed that after deciding to retire, his doctors prescribed a drug that was on the NFL’s banned substance list to help him with his post-career recovery. In late March, nine days after he started taking the drug, he was randomly tested by the NFL. Not thinking he’d be back for another season, Watson complied with the test. However, in April, teams began expressing interest and Watson decided to return…but he had totally forgotten about that random test he had just taken.

It’s a tough break for Watson, who was expected to be an important part of the Patriots offense with Gronk out of the picture.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Pats decide to proceed after this latest bump in the road.
