Here we go again.
The 2023 NFL regular season is still a month away from beginning, but fans better get used to the (many) mind-numbing “roughing the passer” calls again. The New England Patriots have already been reminded of this, just minutes into 2023 preseason play.
On the Houston Texans Texans’ second possession of their Week 1 preseason contest against New England, rookie QB C.J. Stroud drew a “roughing the passer” call on veteran defensive lineman Daniel Ekuale.
Ekuale barely made contact with Stroud, and it was fortunate that he didn’t land up on top of the Ohio State product. And yet, it was enough to draw a flag.
Like we said, football fans better get used to it.
The Texans, however, were unable to capitalize on the opportunity. They wound up punting after a six-play drive that lasted just 2:56.

Over the years, NFL officials have become more strict with “roughing the passer” for obvious reasons. The league is trying to protect its quarterbacks with the hope that they won’t suffer serious long-term injuries.
But when they’re making calls like this, it makes you wonder if the league will ban contact on quarterbacks altogether down the road.
