It’s been reported that New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones went behind Bill Belichick’s back in search of offensive solutions as a result of the team’s struggles this season.
According to Chris Simms of ProFootballTalk, Jones was unhappy with the way things were going and was calling outsiders for advice before the head coach found out and put a stop to it. Simms claimed that things got personal between the two men thereafter.
“Mac Jones wasn’t happy,” Simms said during a segment hosted by Mike Florio last week “He was telling people he wasn’t happy. He was calling people about, ‘Hey, can you help us with ideas and do stuff like that?’
“From my understanding, Belichick found out all these things. He found out that Mac was talking to people, and all this, and there was some back-channel conversations going on behind Belichick’s back. And I think that’s where it did get personal.”
Rather noticeably, Belichick stopped short of committing to Jones as the Pats’ starting QB for next term during his end-of-season presser, simply stating that the 24-year-old “has the ability to play quarterback in this league.“
Jones’ play regressed over the past season and his name has been popping up in trade rumors, with New England having finished the season 8-9.

Of course, the team is partly to blame, having failed to name a real offensive coordinator and having longtime defensive coordinator Mike Patricia call the shots on offense. An ankle injury to Jones didn’t help matters either as rookie Bailey Zappe started two games in his absence and helped the Patriots win both of them.
