The New England Patriots spoke with one of the top quarterback prospects in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft.
Per Dakota Randall of NESN, Florida Gators quarterback Anthony Richardson told reporters that he formally met with the AFC East club at the NFL combine. Richardson stated it “was another great interview for” him.
This may be noteworthy to some since there are questions about Mac Jones’ status with the Patriots. But the Patriots are just one of several teams to have met with Richardson and other top prospects at the combine, so interpret this however you wish.
The Patriots are coming off a disappointing season in which they finished 8-9, due largely to an inconsistent offensive unit. Bill Belichick curiously assigned offensive play-calling duties to Matt Patricia (who carries a defensive background) and Joe Judge (a special teams background).
Jones expressed his frustration during games and on the sidelines several times throughout the 2022 season, leading to speculation that things are rocky between him and New England coaches.
On top of that, rookie Bailey Zappe (a fourth-round draft pick) looked better than Jones at times during his brief four-game stint, winning both starts while tossing five touchdowns against three interceptions.

Many expect Richardson to be a mid-to-late first-round pick in next month’s draft. Alabama’s Bryce Young, Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud and Kentucky’s Will Levis are widely regarded as the top-three quarterback prospects in this year’s class.
Both Young and Stroud are in firm contention to go first overall. The Chicago Bears hold the top pick, but there’s a high chance they’ll trade it to a QB-needy team.
