Bill Belichick could potentially be fired before the end of the current season, according to The Boston Globe’s Ben Volin.
The Pats are now 2-7 on the back of their loss to the Washington Commanders on Sunday and are hurtling toward their worst finish under the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach.
The results have led to lots of speculation as Robert Kraft’s patience is thought to be running thin. And Volin has suggested that the owner could pull the plug on the man he’s trusted to run his team since the year 2000 if the Patriots fall to 2-8 when they play the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
“If Belichick loses at home to the Commanders and then to the Colts, and comes home from Germany with a 2-8 record, I think there’s a chance the Krafts could make the move in the bye week and install Jerod Mayo as the interim coach for the final seven games,” Volin wrote prior to the Commander loss last week.
“Based on my conversations, I don’t think it’s 100% that Belichick finishes out this season,” he also wrote.
Belichick has been around a long time and is the franchise’s most successful coach given his six championships. But the departure of Tom Brady seems to have exposed him as average as the team has had very little success since the split.

Belichick’s decision-making – he’s also the team’s general manager – has been a source of frustration for several years. It has been suggested that he could be relieved of his other duties so he could stick to doing what he does best. However, Kraft could opt to sever all ties if results don’t improve quickly.
