The preliminary results of an autopsy on a New England Patriots fan who died after a “scuffle” at a game Sunday have been released.
Dale Mooney had reportedly been involved in a physical altercation before his death at Gillette Stadium. Mooney was taken to a hospital after he was punched, where he was pronounced dead.
But an autopsy ruled he did not suffer a traumatic injury, but a “medical issue” was identified during the autopsy.
“Our investigation has included numerous law enforcement interviews and the examination of multiple angles of video capturing the scuffle prior to Mr. Dale Mooney’s collapse during the Sunday night game at Gillette Stadium,” Wednesday’s statement read.
“Preliminary autopsy results did not suggest traumatic injury, but did identify a medical issue.”
Lisa Mooney, Dale Mooney’s wife, was quoted in multiple news reports as saying that her husband had been a Patriots season ticket holder for 30 years.
Several videos of the apparent altercation involving Mooney and Dolphins fans have been circulating online. Footage shows Mooney wearing a Patriots jersey and engaging in a confrontation that turns violent. An assailant who cannot be clearly seen lands a blow on Mooney’s temple, sending him crumpling into his seat.
The Massachusetts State Police said Mooney “suffered an apparent medical event” during the fourth quarter of the Patriots prime time game on Sunday night. Police and firefighters were called around 11 p.m. to the 300-tier section of the stadium to give medical attention to Mooney after what witnesses have said online was an altercation in the stands.

The Dolphins fan, who threw the punch, was escorted away by police, according to witnesses.
No charges have been filed in relation to Mooney’s death as of Thursday. Mooney’s death is still under investigation by the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office.
