One of the Baltimore Ravens’ key players on defense was apparently selected randomly by the NFL to do two drug tests in three days.
Soon after the Ravens’ 25-9 season opening home win against the Houston Texans, fourth-year linebacker Patrick Queen revealed on X (formerly known as “Twitter”) that the league randomly selected him for a second drug test in just 72 hours.
The 2020 first-round pick had a superb season-opening performance on Sunday, recording one pass defense, a sack and 11 combined tackles. Queen is coming off a career year in which he tallied five sacks, two interceptions and six pass defenses for the Ravens.
Interestingly, the Ravens declined the fifth-year option on Queen’s rookie contract. Baltimore handed fellow linebacker Roquan Smith (acquired from the Chicago Bears in a 2022 midseason trade) a five-year extension worth $100 million, and they used a third-round pick on Clemson LB Trenton Simpson.
Those two moves strongly suggest that Baltimore is ready to move on from Queen. But even if they decide not to re-sign him after this season, Queen promises to land a lucrative deal in 2024 free agency if he continues his strong play.
