All the National Football League needs to do is just watch highlights of Patrick Mahomes and kindly strike down any proposal of trying to go with an alternative to the onside kick rule.
The NFL is exploring the idea of implementing a new rule during the 2020 season where it would give teams an alternative to attempting an onside kick, and Patrick Mahomes appears to be onboard with it. The new rule would allow teams to attempt to convert on 4th-and-15 from their own 25-yard line instead of kicking the ball off or going for an onside kick.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes indicated he thinks that might be rather attainable for his offense.
Since the elimination of a running start on kickoffs, converting onside kicks have become damn near impossible. Teams have recovered an onside kick at a rate of just 10.4 percent in the last two seasons, including a rate of 7.7 percent in 2018, the lowest since such data became available in 1992.
The rule change saw in-season implementation in the now-defunct Alliance of American Football.
