Patrick Mahomes is the latest athlete to voice support for U.S. sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson and called her absence from the U.S. Olympic relay team “ridiculous.”
The 21-year-old track star was left off the United States’ Olympic team in the 4×100-meter relay on July 6, less than a week after her positive test for marijuana at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., was revealed. The United States Anti-Doping Agency announced Richardson accepted a one-month ban for her positive test.
On Thursday, the Kansas City Chiefs QB had this to say about the situation:
“She put in the work,” the Chiefs quarterback said. “Even though she made a mistake — like we all make mistakes in whatever way that is — but to give her an almost extra ban, to not let her be at the Olympics at all, it’s pretty ridiculous to me.”
“For her to be left off, after all the hard work and dedication that she’s put into the sport, and for her to be one of those bright young stars for the USA, it’s just disappointing.”
Richardson learned of her mother’s death and called the event “triggering” and “nerve-shocking.” She later ingested marijuana in Oregon. USA Track and Field said the organization is “sympathetic” toward Richardson’s situation, adding it “will offer her our continued support both on and off the track.”
