The Kansas City Chiefs almost had to use superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes at a unique position in last Thursday’s home tilt against the Denver Broncos. But if the occasion calls for it, he’ll be ready to perform double duty against the Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday.
Per ESPN’s Adam Teicher, Mahomes was the Chiefs’ backup plan at punter in Week 6 against the Broncos if punter Tommy Townsend was unable to play, as the latter was dealing with a knee injury.
“(Mahomes) is our backup punter,” said Chiefs’ special teams coach Dave Toub, via Teicher. “He could do it. He shows me all the time he’s out there (at practice). Boom. That guy, it’s unbelievable.”
As noted by Teicher, Townsend was on this week’s injury report but is expected to play. In the event that he can’t, however, fans just might get the opportunity to see the reigning league MVP play punter. What a sight that would be.
The 26-year-old Townsend is in his fourth season with the Chiefs. He’s suited up for all six of Kansas City’s games this season, averaging 48.7 yards per punt with just one touchback and eight punts inside the opposition’s 20-yard line.
As for the 28-year-old Mahomes, he’s been inconsistent to start the year with a 68.3 completion percentage for 1,593 yards and 11 touchdowns against five interceptions. But the Chiefs are sitting comfortably at 5-1, having won five in a row following their Week 1 loss to the Detroit Lions.
