Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes wasted no time defending teammate Kadarius Toney after the latter’s tough outing in the team’s Week 1 home loss to the Detroit Lions.
With star tight end Travis Kelce out (bone bruise and hyper-extended knee), Mahomes needed his other pass-catchers to answer the call. He looked Toney’s way several times, but the 2021 first-round pick struggled mightily with three costly drops.
Per ESPN’s Adam Teicher, the reigning league MVP made it clear that he still carries faith in the third-year wideout despite his tough outing.
“I have trust in KT…Stuff’s not always going to go your way,” Mahomes said.
One of Toney’s dropped passes went into the hands of Brian Branch for a Lions’ pick-six. Another one came on a 3rd-and-2 play that forced KC to settle for a field goal instead of getting a fresh set of downs in the red zone.
The third came on the Chiefs’ final drive of the game, which ended with a turnover on downs. Detroit melted the clock for a close 21-20 win

Mahomes led the Chiefs in rushing yards with 45 (on just six carries). Marquez Valdes-Scantling was the club’s leading receiver, and he had just 48 yards on two receptions. Toney himself had one catch for one yard and one carry for -1 rushing yards.
The Chiefs haven’t started out 0-2 since the 2014 season. They’ll try to avoid a brutal 0-2 start when they visit the Jacksonville Jaguars next Sunday.
