The 2017 NFL Draft lives in infamy for Chicago Bears fans after selecting Mitchell Trubisky after trading up to No. 2 overall, while passing on Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs would go on to select Patrick Mahomes 10th overall in the draft, making him the second quarterback off the board. Deshaun Watson would be selected by the Houston Texans two picks later.
Since that day, Mahomes has won league MVP and captured his first Super Bowl title. Mahomes now has another shot for his second ring, while the Bears own the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft after playing to a 3-14 record.
Mahomes’ father said during that interview that Chicago informed them it would select Mahomes third overall in 2017. Mahomes clarified the comments his father, Pat Mahomes Sr., made about the Chicago Bears and the 2017 NFL draft last week during an appearance on 670 The Score’s Parkins & Spiegel Show.
He told reporters Tuesday in Arizona ahead of Super Bowl LVII:
“My dad took it a little far,” said the Kansas City quarterback. “It wasn’t that I thought the Bears were going to draft me — but I was told that if they drafted a quarterback, that I would be the quarterback that they drafted.
“[My dad] acted like they were going to draft me for sure in that interview — and I don’t know if it was that serious.”
Mahomes would then add that Kansas City was always the place he wanted to be.

“I wanted to get drafted here — to the Kansas City Chiefs — and I think it’s well- documented that I wanted to get drafted here.”
If the Bears had drafted Mahomes, maybe they’d be the ones gearing up for the Super Bowl instead of preparing for the 2023 draft.
While the Bears selected Justin Fields 11th overall in the 2021 draft and he showed promise during this campaign, he hasn’t proved the guy going forward. They are unlikely to select a QB in this draft, which may come back to bite them yet again.
