Alex Smith, who made a remarkable comeback from an injury that nearly cost him his leg, announced Monday on Instagram that he is retiring from football.
The 36-year-old was the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year in 2020 after helping lead the Washington Football Team to the NFC East title. Smith underwent 17 surgeries to fight an infection and opted not to have his leg amputated. He kept fighting and never gave up as his hard work would pay off and he would see himself playing in multiple games last season.
Shortly after his announcement, Kansas City Chiefs head coach and QB Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes spoke about Smith:
“He’s a heck of a person. I told him if he gets into coaching, I’ll get first dibs on him. He’s a guy you’d love to have on your staff. A special person and one of my all time favorites.”
