Pat McAfee had a shocking revelation about the lawsuit brought against him by Brett Favre.
When Brett Favre slapped Pat McAfee with a defamation lawsuit last month, the former NFL punter thought somebody was trying to joke around with him. The former Green Bay Packers quarterback is suing McAfee and Undisputed‘s Shannon Sharpe for defamation of character.
In a recent interview with Front Office Sports, McAfee revealed that he thought the lawsuit was a prank.
“Honestly, I was like, ‘Oh, this has gotta be fake,’” McAfee said. “I thought it was like [WWE commentator] Michael Cole or maybe [former NFL kicker Adam] Vinatieri. There are humans in my life who would certainly go through a lot of things just to be like, ‘Oh, I got you.’ I thought it was a rib.
“But I guess this is real life. It’s part of my life now, you know?”
Once he realized it was the real deal, he made a comment during his show about the situation.
“I’m getting sued by Brett Favre. We made it boys. Let’s raise our drinks,” he said on the Pat McAfee Show. “When we started this little show in the basement of a house that certainly was haunted and the mics rarely worked and we talked for an hour and a half on numerous occasions and found out we weren’t recording — this show has grown so much that.
“We’re lucky to be live from Radio Row. We are lucky to have a little bit of say in sports. We’re thankful that we have the opportunity every day to be part of the sports media world. And I guess whenever you get a little bit too big, you fly a little bit too close to the sun.”

Last week, it was reported Brett Favre’s defamation lawsuit against Pat McAfee was being moved to federal court. McAfee requested to remove the case to federal court from Lamar County, Mississippi, where it was originally filed.
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio noted the decision to remove the case from Mississippi was the “only play” for McAfee because “home cooking exists” in state courts.
Favre filed three separate defamation lawsuits against McAfee, Shannon Sharpe, and Mississippi State Auditor Shad White. Those lawsuits accused all three men of “carrying out an outrageous media campaign falsely accusing Favre of stealing from poor people in Mississippi’s largest welfare fraud scheme.”
The Mississippi Department of Human Services sued several people including Favre in 2022 over misspent welfare funds that were intended to go to an anti-poverty program in the state.
McAfee used his show to criticize Favre over the allegations as the story gained national attention.
It may end up costing him in the long run.
