Joseph Person reports that the Browns and Panthers have been in talks about a potential trade for QB Baker Mayfield. Person added that Panthers GM David Tepper would likely want Cleveland to pay for some of Mayfield’s $18.8 million salary.
However, discussions over the trade came to a halt as both teams couldn’t figure out how to split Mayfield’s $18.8 million in guaranteed salary next season. Mayfield’s money is the sole reason most teams have not been aggressive in their pursuit of the veteran QB.
The Panthers seemed to end all speculation by going out and drafting Ole Miss QB Matt Corral with the 94th pick.
Mayfield is entering his fifth year in the league.

The Panthers are the team that has made the most sense for Mayfield and interest has been rumored for weeks. He could be seen as an upgrade from Sam Darnold, who went 4-9 with Carolina last season.
Carolina Panthers GM Scott Fitterer would end their pursuit of Mayfield with his comments following the drafting of Corral.
The Browns no longer have any use for Mayfield after they acquired Deshaun Watson from the Texans for a package including three first-round picks. They then gave him an enormous, fully guaranteed contract worth $230 million.
The quarterback felt “disrespected” by the team’s communication amid the Watson acquisition.
“Yeah the respect thing is all going to be a personal thing, but yeah, I feel disrespected. 100 percent,” Mayfield said in April.
“Because I was told one thing, and they completely did another. That’s what I’m in the middle of now. And you know what? Okay. I got my taste of it, because I’ve had four different head coaches in four years. A bunch of different coordinators.”
