Could we see the first-overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft get traded TWICE in one offseason?
It’s a pretty unimaginable scenario, as teams who trade for the first-overall pick tend to do so with the intention of taking a highly-coveted player they have their sights set on. However, according to a report that’s now circulating around the media (and has been confirmed by trusted Panthers insider Scott Fowler), Carolina is “open to trading” the first-overall pick in the 2023 draft that they just acquired from the Chicago Bears.
According to the report, the Panthers are open to moving down a few spots and still getting their quarterback of the future, while also recouping some picks in the deal.
The Panthers gave up their 9th and 61st overall picks in this year’s draft, a first-rounder in 2024, a second-rounder in 2025, and star wide receiver DJ Moore in order to get the top pick of the draft from the Bears earlier today.
That may be a lot of draft capital to give up, but the Panthers were able to afford it thanks to the Christian McCaffrey trade during the 2022 season. Even after their blockbuster deal with the Bears, Carolina still has their own second-rounder this year, the 49ers’ third-rounder, and two fourth-rounders, in addition to the first-overall pick.

And if they’re able to find another trade partner for the No. 1 pick, they could add even more draft capital to their arsenal, all while getting the franchise quarterback they’ve book searching for ever since Cam Newton’s career fell off a cliff.
