Following the conclusion of last season, the Green Bay Packers having Aaron Rodgers as its quarterback for the future seemed to be a distant memory as he demanded a trade and wouldn’t show up to talk with anybody.
Things changed drastically as the two sides came to an agreement, relationship got so much better, but it still ended in heartbreak in the playoffs.
While Rodgers, who is under contract, prepares for the offseason and examines his options, CEO Mark Murphy is making it abundantly clear that they’d like him back in green and gold next season.
“A key factor will be whether Aaron Rodgers comes back for the 2022 season,” wrote Murphy on the Packers’ official team website. “Matt, Brian, executive vice president/director of football operations Russ Ball and I are all in agreement that we want Aaron to come back. He is likely to win his fourth league MVP, is the unquestioned leader of our team and is still playing at a high level at 38.
Although we will face many challenges this offseason, I have tremendous confidence in Matt, Brian and Russ. I don’t think anyone in the league knows the rules regarding the salary cap better than Russ. He will be our most valuable employee this offseason.”
Considered one of the greatest players to ever play the QB position, Rodgers followed up an MVP-winning season by potentially producing another. The first game of the year started off terribly, which led to speculation that he may be sabotaging the season.
Rodgers then shut everybody up for the rest of the year with his play on the field. Rodgers tossed 37 touchdowns and finished the season with 4,115 total yards through the air, four interceptions and a quarterback rating of 111.9.
