The Green Bay Packers may end up trading another superstar for the third consecutive offseason, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
In 2022, it was All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams. Last year, it was franchise icon and four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers. This time, it could be the franchise’s best defensive back in cornerback Jaire Alexander.
On Saturday, Schefter reported that the Packers’ decision on Alexander will likely “”revolve around” an $8 million roster bonus that’s owed to him on March 20.
“The Green Bay Packers’ long-term decision regarding the future of Jaire Alexander is expected to revolve around the $8 million roster bonus owed to the star cornerback on March 20, league sources told ESPN.
But his $8 million bonus now is expected to become the trigger point that likely will lead the Packers into a decision on whether to they want to keep Alexander or move on from him. Should they keep him, the Packers simply would pick up the option bonus, but Green Bay also could explore a trade.
There are other factors at stake for the Packers, who prefer that their players participate in their offseason program in Green Bay, which Alexander hasn’t done. He surrendered a $700,000 workout bonus last spring to skip the Packers’ offseason program and work out in Florida instead.”
The Packers suspended Alexander for Sunday’s Week 17 must-win contest against the Minnesota Vikings for “conduct detrimental to the team”. Alexander made the coin toss call for the Packers in last week’s road game against the Carolina Panthers, even though he wasn’t designated as a captain.
In the 2022 offseason, the All-Pro cornerback signed a lucrative four-year contract extension worth $84 million. For his career, Alexander has 10 interceptions, 62 pass defenses and three forced fumbles.
