The rough-the-passer calls are seemingly getting worse by the week. Defensive players have to basically learn how to tackle a quarterback and then somehow push themselves and their body weight off of them within a milli-second to avoid being penalized.
Aside from fans, one former player wants to do something about this.
Former Green Bay Packers pass rusher Clay Matthews tweeted on Thursday night after a blown call on Nick Bosa negated a pick-6 for the 49ers.
“I’d like to be employed by the NFL as THE replay official for all roughing the passer penalties. Put me in NY. I wouldn’t get a call wrong!” Matthews tweeted.
Anyone rushing the quarterback are being told not to finish their tackle now. The NFL’s increased protection of quarterbacks makes landing with your body weight on the quarterback a big no in the eyes of referees. It has become downright ridiculous.
The missed call on Bosa was made up by him with another sack which is now 15.5.

In his fourth year now, Bosa is primed to break his career-high in sacks from last year when he also put up an astounding 15.5. The 49ers still have three games to play.
Matthews played 11 seasons, 10 of them for the Green Bay Packers and his last for his hometown Los Angeles Rams. Matthews was a one-time All-Pro who finished his career with 91.5 sacks, 519 tackles, 200 QB hits and 17 forced fumbles.
He was a member of the Packers’ 2010 Super Bowl-championship squad.
